Governor Gavin Newsom visited UC Merced and pledged state support for the proposed Health, Behavioral Sciences and Medical Education Building – a $210 million on-campus facility designed to anchor a B.S.-to-M.D. joint degree program in partnership with UCSF-Fresno. State general-fund dollars had been set aside for construction, with prior California budgets adding ongoing operational support for the joint medical education program.
The visit reinforced the institution's medium-term enrollment and faculty trajectory in the Central Valley – the same structural backdrop that anchors the housing-demand thesis underlying the New Course-developed Merced Station student-housing community adjacent to campus.
